Re: Finished Mockingjay a couple days ago. (and a Fred from Angel comparison?)
Also, I liked Mockingjay. Not as much as the others but I liked it. People complain about Katniss not having a lot of autonomy and being used but I enjoyed watching her regain her autonomy over the course of the book.
Re: Finished Mockingjay a couple days ago. (and a Fred from Angel comparison?)
It isn't so much her lack of autonomy as the fact that the narrative is so dependent on her perspective that we therefore miss huge chunks of the story.
That and the fact that she WENT AND VOTED FOR A FINAL HUNGER GAMES appears to go almost utterly unaddressed. No introspection from the constantly inward gazing Katniss! Nope! Let's just breeze past that bit!
Re: Finished Mockingjay a couple days ago. (and a Fred from Angel comparison?)
I completely agree with you about how she voted. I've seen theories that she was just trying to placate Coin until she could get rid of her but there's nothing in the book to support that. There's no explanation at all.

I was going to re-read them as chard was reading them for the first time but I...haven't...done that...Re: Finished Mockingjay a couple days ago. (and a Fred from Angel comparison?)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-03 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)She tests Hamish to see whether he knows her well enough to understand that she's up to something. She votes yes "for Prim", which is a hefty nudge and a wink that she's not really voting to go back to how things were whe Prim's reaping started everything. Hamish gets it. After three books inside her head, the reader ought to too.
At this point, the question Katniss is wrestling with is whether she believes Coin and D13 are capable of using children's deaths (like Prim's) to gain the upperhand. Now she has her answer. Mockingjay Katniss has learned some things in the war and knows how to play a longer game by choosing her moment. She plays along long enough to get into position, but she still makes the exact same choice she did the first time she fought outside the box - she shoots an arrow at the gamesmaker.
