I adore sci-fi, and I really like elements of hard sci-fi but I don't like the military hard sci-fi stories. I have no interest in reading about space battle tactics and weapons.

I would recommend to you The Space Opera Renaissance. It's a really interesting look at the origins of space opera (which YMMV) and contains selections from the last two centuries. I didn't like all the stories but there were some real gems in the anthology.

Ah well, usually people dub a story a "space opera" if it's more on the soft side of sci-fi. Not that I mind this at all, since I love space operas and will never be able to get enough of soft sci-fi. :P

*nods nods*

Which is why I said YMMV, but I *think* some of the stories were pretty heavy on the tech and the worldbuilding. And because it's an anthology, so varied. Something for everyone. :)
