Even though they were the "trope namers" for the kind of thing you're talking about and it's referenced a lot in pop culture, I don't think they're really a straight example. They are best friends and the status quo for the story is that he never chooses one (except in The Married Life, which is a separate story, and awesome, and the side story to that where he chooses Valerie, which imo is the best ship along with Betty/Veronica but I am going to stop tl;dring about Archie now because it's getting way off point.). I agree that it needs to stop, in any case.
