He did it to save his family from a murderous drug kingpin. The kid was fine.

No, he did it to emotionally manipulate Jesse and save his own skin. If he wanted to save his family from a murderous drug kingpin, he wouldn't have started making meth in the first place.

No, he did it to save his family. He tried using his money to get them new identities away from Gus but Skyler had already spent it.

And clearly when he started working with Gus he didn't anticipate that a chain of events would occur that would lead to Gus threatening to kill his infant daughter.

Walt is show to be a very, very intelligent man. I find it hard to believe that he couldn't anticipate working for Gus might end badly for him.

Well, on the other hand, he's also very arrogant, so maybe it didn't occur to him. Either way, that doesn't give him a by on all the bad things he did to "protect" his family.

There was nothing to indicate that things would go as bad as they did. Gus wasn't Tuco.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
He never would have worked with Gus OR Tuco if he had accepted the money from Gretchen and Elliot.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, nearly every bad thing that ever happened on the show wouldn't have happened if he hadn't started making meth in the first place. Including the entire show. That wouldn't have happened.

Exactly. And we would be the poorer for it, because it is a great show - but "to entertain the audience" is also not a good defense for Walter White. He's not meant to be the good guy.

Oh yeah, I completely agree with you. Just felt it was worth typing.

I think it's worthy catch-all argument for extreme Walt-sympathizers, actually. 'But, he did this for his family--' SHOULDN'T HAVE STARTED MAKING METH. 'He was only protecting--' PEOPLE FROM THE REPERCUSSIONS OF HIS MAKING METH? 'But, he obviously loves--' METTTTHHHHH.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm imagining you actually yelling that to people and when I got to "METTTTHHHHH" I burst out laughing.
