I can't help but wonder of the OP is one of those "there are no interesting female characters so all my favorites are male" fans.

I'm not the OP and not at all a "no female characters are interesting" fan (my favorite characters in at least half my fandoms are probably female) but I thought all four of them were anything but flat. Given some other changes the movie could have still worked without either of the guys, but I also don't think a character needs to be able to carry a story on their own to not be defined as non-flat.

I'm generally a "female characters are so rarely well-written that all of my favorite characters are male" person, but I still really liked Elsa and Anna. Not exactly shining bastions of great characterization, but I get them.
