I remember being really freaked out on my twentieth birthday, because I was supposed to be a grownup and I *didn't know *.

On my *fortieth* birthday, I looked in the mirror, said "How did that happen?" and giggled. (Then my brother and sister sent an Elvis impersonator to serenade me at work, which distracted me nicely.)

I've now crossed a line into official middle age and you know what? Most of the time life is *fun.* And frankly a hell of a lot less lonely than my teens were.

Most of us are scared of the great unknown, and it often doesn't turn out as we planned, but honestly, it's often pretty good, too!
