Shared history, yes, but in context of US history it's arguably the most important event ever, whereas in context of British history it's one of the most important events of the 18th century. Er, I hope that doesn't sound dismissive! We, um, tend to spend more time in history lessons on our various waves of invasions and civil wars than on that period of history when we were busily invading other countries. Getting invaded is rather less embarrassing...

A lovely American asked what we covered about the War of Independence in history in the UK - nothing. Nothing. We've list a lot of countries.

Naw I get it. When I said knew him, like "oh yeah, he was in a footnoe" or something. I woudln't imagine it to be covered nearly as much so it makes sense the tiny details get no mention at all.
