I'm not enjoying Pokémon Y any where near as much as I hoped I would.

Aww I'm sorry anon :( I hate it when I'm looking forward to something and don't enjoy it. It's sucky.

as someone torn between buying X/Y or not, could you please elaborate on what you didn't like/was underwhelming?

Oh dear. If you listen to my whinging, I don't think you'll end up wanting to buy the game, but here we go anyway.

I found that the pacing is poor. There's lots of non-Gym towns between Badges 1, 2 and 3, then suddenly the rest of the Badges come thick and fast. Team Flare don't appear much or DO much up until after your sixth Badge or so. After how heavy-handed they were with Plasma's story (and how good it was, for a Pokémon game, at least), it makes Flare's story seem really lackluster. I know no one plays a Pokémon game for the story, but after Black and White, I hoped that we were going to be seeing more story-focused games and instead, it looks like they've decided not to bother again.

I also felt that the routes were really short, especially if you compare them to how long some of the routes in Hoenn and Sinnoh were. Like Unova, it's an extremely linear region, but without the strength of the on-going story to justify it.

I also felt that the game is much too easy and would've liked a bit more challenge. Levelling is ridiculously easy, even more so than Unova. You get an Exp Share that distributes Exp to all your team in a battle, even if they didn't fight. I had to switch it off, as I was getting so over-levelled that nothing posed a challenge any more. Being level 50 for the sixth Badge was overkill!

In regards to the actual PokéDex, there's only about 70 new Pokémon, which I think is a disappointing number. I was hoping for at least 100, like Johto/Sinnoh, so for there to be so few underwhelmed me. A lot of the new Pokémon are either pretty good or have good concepts, though, so some of it might be down to quality over quantity.

I also don't care for Mega Evolutions- a lot of them seem unnecessary and I think they're horribly overdesigned, but I also recognise that the target demographic for the idea of them is probably kids who enjoy that "one-up-manship" against their friends. It's also a matter of opinion- some folks really like them, and that's fine.

I didn't really think they'd handled the friendship group very well. They added too many friendly rivals without giving any of them enough characterisation. I'm not asking for deep characters with long arcs, just something more like "I like dancing!" or "I want to complete the PokéDex!" Cheren and Bianca were more interesting than Tierno or Trevor. I found myself not even caring if I beat my rivals in battle.

I also think the music is underwhelming. They have a lot at their disposal and I felt that the instruments were capable of a lot more, yet most of the music felt really forgettable to me. The Gym Leader battle music is especially bad- it sounds as if it's going towards a climax and it just drops and repeats over instead.

So, tl;dr- in my opinion, the story isn't very good, the game is too easy, there's too few new Pokémon, I didn't personally care for Megas, there's four crappy rivals and forgettable music.

ayrt

thank you so much for the in-depth reply! you covered all the things I wanted to know :)

it sounds like I would really regret buying it (especially since I would have to buy the 3DS too)

it's like, the virtual opposite of what I like in my Pokémon games D:

phew, bullet dodged.

Same here. I bought Y expecting to play it all the time, but found I just couldn't finish it. I read your complaints to the other anon, and I have to agree with all of them.

Ditto this and all your complaints in reply to the other anon.

I beat the game, mucked around with Friend Safari and Super Training a bit, and then went back to Fire Emblem.

I was especially disappointed by Team Flare. After Team Plasma, that was terrible.

The only thing I really liked in X/Y was the Looker sidequests.
