Yes to both. Esp Snape...i can see the "he brought it all on himself" argument, but i mostly feel bad for him and wish he hadnt gotten a raw deal. I dont like apologists as such, more "i see some hurt, gimme some comfort dammit"

If we take what we see in book canon, Snape truly did have a wretched childhood. I absolutely love that sort of h/c fic. Could eat it with a spoon.

Well, he was a teenage when he brought it on himself. How many teenagers fall in to bad crowds just to have friends, or into gangs for a sense of security? (Like James - how many teen boys are dicks to impress a girl or to feel a bit powerful during hormore hurricane season?) It's pretty easy to feel bad for him.
