I side-eye people who claim to be HUGE geeks but have no idea what fanfiction or fandom culture is. Not necessarily an active participant, but not even knowing that fanfiction exists.

What the fuck? Fanfiction is not the most important thing about fandom. There's no reason anyone needs to give a fuck about fan fiction to be a geek.

nayrt

they said "be aware of" not "give a fuck about" or "think it's super important". and i think that's kinda reasonable.

are you sure they're not just pretending to not know about it because it's usually seen as a really creepy (and girly) thing?

Should we be giving someone a pass for pretending not to know about something b/c they think it's girly?

when did I say anything about giving someone a pass for anything? I'm just saying that's how fic is perceived, which might lead to people pretending they don't know what it is

IDK I can see it happen. I've got friends who are WAY into Dr Who, own all the dvds, buy memorabilia, paid loads of money to see one of those event episodes in the cinema, know all this random trivia.

But they're not involved in fandom in the slightest. The idea of fanfiction probably just hasn't crossed their minds. I wouldn't say that this somehow voids them from counting as huge geeks.

If anything, I sideeye right back at you for judging people on their 'geek level' by their knowledge of fandom culture. ;)
