I like Danny more for what he represents - a positively-portrayed gay guy who isn't a caricature or a side kick or a punching bag, with a life outside of his gayness - than anything about him as an individual, because he doesn't actually have a personality or a purpose. I almost wish he did, but when gay characters are given personality, that's usually when things start down the caricature route, so I'm careful what I wish for. I'll take wooden and respectful over interesting and "colorful gay best friend" any day. Same with the non-white characters.

I get that. But at this point I feel like the *only* reason he's there is to be "the gay guy" which annoys me as much as any caricature or punching bag schtick would.

I also feel that if he weren't there maybe Jeff Davis wouldn't use him as an excuse for legit LGBT character and maybe we'd get one of the existing actually important characters some gayness. (I would pay to have Lydia/Allison or Lydia/Cora. It is my random love.) I live in a dream world, I know.

Yeah, you have a point there. It's time for Danny to get a purpose or his place on the show will lose all positive meaning. If the romance with Ethan could actually start to go somewhere meaningful enough for Danny to matter to the main plot of the show, that would be great. I have no hope for Lydia, she's practically got "reserved for Stiles" tattooed on her fine behind, but there's possibilities for Cora. She's enough of a blank slate that her casually revealing she's bisexual/gay wouldn't shake things up significantly. It'd be nice.
