I've given up on arguing for or against the snape. People are going to think what they want to think and I sincerely doubt anything I have to say will sway anyone's opinion. Woobie in canon? I don't recall seeing it, but I don't see him as the evil, soul-destroying monster others want to paint him as, either. Still, I find him to be a fascinating character and a very human one.
