I never understood this fuss, either. I mean, it's obvious Aang did love all his kids. And absolutely, it's understandable that Kya and Bumi might have been rather resentful with the attention Tenzin got overt time. But for fuck's sake, literally an entire nation, culture, and form of bending was at stake. Of course Aang was going to focus on his one airbending kid - he had to! They are far from a normal family, they are a single family carrying an entire cultural heritage on their backs, and it's very much on Tenzin and Aang to pass these on.

Definitely, I think Kya and Bumi, given the opportunity, could have been instrumental in helping at least hold on to air-bending traditions and pass them on (especially since there is a good chance one or both could pass the airbending genes on to their descendents), but at the same time, the Air Nomads have been a historically all or nearly-all airbender culture, and even with the help of the air acolytes it's still, at least for now, something the airbenders themselves have to carry on through the generations as the air nation population rebuilds.
