I have no comment on the content of this secret, but I approve of its construction.

I love the art, too. I honestly feel that the "unrefined", choppy style suits the storytelling. Gives it character. Sure, the anime is more beautiful, but I don't get the hate the manga illustrations get.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's usually how weird the proportions can get. Teeeeeny hands, short arms, and big heads. That, and the artist doesn't really know how muscles work. It's something you get used to, but I always found that it ruined the mood sometimes.

That bottom panel is hilarious.
I don't watch/read this series at all because the titans just skeeve me out too much, and I suppose that part of that comes from the art style, but it's really because they look grotesque. I know they're supposed to be grotesque but I just... AAArrrrghh. That being said, I don't see anything wrong with the artwork in the images you used, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I feel you OP. I don't think the art would work for most other series but I think it suits snk fairly well. Sure, there are some panels that look really off/weird but overall I've become fond of the art.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the art. I won't deny it has some serious anatomical issues, but I do like it.

Secret 3 - Shingeki no Kyojin, Attack on Titan (manga)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-05 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is a scan from a page from the "Shingeki no Kyojin" or "Attack on Titan" manga. It shows a blond woman calmly talking to the rest of the cast, who are various youngsters sitting at a dining table and looking at her with varying degrees of surprise and attention.]

I love Hajime Isayama's artwork. I wouldn't have the art for Shingeki no Kyojin any other way.

I have really bad taste, I know.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
it looks fine to me?

i mean, the characters don't seem to suffer from Same Face Syndrome, and i can tell what is going in that scene, so points to the mangaka there

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that a lot of people think the bottom panel looks fine make me feel a lot more confident about my work! haha. BUT anyway OP I like a lot of art in comics that otherwise I wouldn't like. 99% of what i want from a comic is legibility. Can I tell what the heck is going on? then its good.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I also like the art. It's unique and fitting.

It has improved a lot since earlier chapters and there are some weird looking panels here and there, but I still think it's pretty effective.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Took me until you mentioned SnK for me to realize that was the art in the secret. My problem with the artist of SnK will always be that his characters are completely unrecognizable from character to character and panel to panel, effectiveness or no.

yeah, you have a point there. On one hand, he did try to give diversity in terms of facial features, which is cool. On the other hand, holy lack of consistency Batman.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
My problem is, usually, is during the fight scenes. There isn't a lot of body or silhouette diversity and you can't see the faces usually during the fight scenes. Even outside the fight scenes, I kept mixing up Eren and Levi. I always mix up Armin and Christa.

Also sometimes Eren and Levi look the same.

Also Petra, Armin, and Christa pretty much look the same. Though as the art progressed it got easier to tell Armin and Christa apart.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-01-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried reading the manga, but the art is just ugh. It's like yaoi hands.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
It gets better, IMO.

Yeah in the beginning it REALLY sucks.

Not saying the art now is without flaws, but it's improved a lot.

Also the art is not very consistent. Sometimes it's like godawful bad, but sometimes it's amazing.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I think his style really suits the story. And I really enjoy seeing his artwork improve as the manga progresses. There are some panels that really wow me.

I think that his style has its good points, and works with the story.

"I can't draw proportions" and "I don't know anatomy" are not style, and I think Isayama needs to get on those stat. If he kept the style but knew how to draw the manga would look great, yes. TBH for me it's one of the reasons I can't bring myself to buy the manga.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah he definitely needs to work on those, but with the breakneck pacing of the manga industry I don't know how anyone is supposed to improve! it's nuts!

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not in the fandom, but isn't SnK a monthly series? If so, then he has more time than those with weekly series.

Yeah, that's my complaint too. The gritty, ink brush style is fantastic but the guy cannot fucking DRAW. It's not just proportions and anatomy, but even basic things like expressions; there's been so many times that I can't 'read' the emotions of a character because they have some weird trollface.

Hell, in one of the latest chapters someone mentions that Erwin is smiling creepily and I hadn't realised that his smile was SUPPOSED to be disturbing.

We can be wrong together, anon! I enjoy his art as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a fan of the art too. Will Isayama ever win an award for best skills at drawing? No. But he's definitely improved a lot so far and I've found that the "weird" looking panels have decreased as time's gone on.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-06 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with others about his issues with anatomy basics but I really like the style. It's particularly well-suited to gore, and I especially appreciate that. And yes he does improve as it goes on. Though when I went back to re-read the first volume I was actually impressed at the number of panels I admired, because when I read it the first time I remembered detesting the art.

Anyway, even with the anatomy and other issues, I still enjoy the manga art more than the anime art. The anime just feels like it doesn't have any soul. And if you wanna talk about shitty art, just check out the animation in some of those episodes, especially in the latter middle part of the run.
