I don't actually know anything about him and I've never read the books. But I guess you can take comfort in that you're not the only one with that sentiment, OP. GRRM gets a lot of criticism.

Oh, god, how much do I actually honest-to-god hope the series is never finished? And then after the massive fandom explosion maybe it can quietly die away never to be heard from again. Please please please, gods of irony?

Not gonna happen. If GRRM dies before finishing his last novel, HBO has his entire plotline to complete the series. It was one of the conditions of their contract with him.

The gods of irony have a very rich sense of irony indeed.
