Man, I was so hopeless at history when I was younger. I just couldn't internalize anything that didn't come from an American Girl book.

that's exactly my problem. I can't hang on to it unless it's part of a story...there was one American History book in middle school that was really interesting, so I remember some of that, but most history classes I've had were deathly dull and made me feel like I was drowning in dates and context-less black-and-white portrait photographs.
