Scott McCall, an asthmatic teenage citizen of the civilian habitat ship Beacon, is coaxed into sneaking into the quarantine bay by his friend Stiles to look at the rare piece of ship segment that had floated into their orbit the day before after one of the recently arrived examiners is killed on it.

While exploring the halls of the debris Scott comes across a sealed room that opens, releasing a strange animal that bites him. He then gets sucked into the underground world of werewolves - the descendants, both bitten and blood, of a people who colonized an alien planet but after having a strange reaction to one of the native diseases were quarantined and abandoned there.

Hale pack, one of the rare few packs who'd, centuries earlier, managed to amass enough technology to get off the werewolf planet before the Hunters destroyed it, was killed when one of the few remaining Hunter families still around snuck onto their ship and caused the core reactor to explode. Peter survived by locking himself in a safe room and putting himself into hypersleep, and Derek and Laura and Kora happened to be near escape pods when the blast happened and floated to human ships.

Laura hears about the ship fragment and comes to investigate, only to find a power and revenge obsessed Peter who kills her to become alpha. Derek arrives when he learns about her death and then all sorts of werewolfy shenanigans start happening.
