I spent last weekend watching all of the Hobbit: Unexpected Journey extras (6 hours!!!) and one feature was about the Bag End set next to the green screen set. They would perform at the same time, but Ian would be completely alone on his set. Luckily, it was only the Bag End scenes that were this bad.

They made him feel better by recreating Rivendell in his make-up tent with fresh flowers, fabric etc and he was genuinely touched.

CGI can of course help an actor as well! Christopher Lee and Ian Holm were both too frail to go to NZ so their scenes were shot in London. Christopher was then spliced into the Rivendell scene with Cate, Hugo and Ian.

I love how Christopher is just so steadfast and determined to be involved in the making of these films, even at his old age. Although I wonder why they didn't just film Ian, Cate and Hugo in London with him prior to going to NZ for the rest of the shoot.

Maybe because Ian was already in NZ for filming, and the flight across the Tasman Sea is a far shorter trip for Hugo and Cate to make.
