Who Else Got Swine Flu Four Years Too Late?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
*raises hand*

Last bad flu I had was '99, laid me out for about six weeks, but I never got pneumonia that time. This one was (I thought at first) relatively short. Then the bacterial infection kicked in, two days later after the Pig Flu had finished kicking my immune system in the teeth. This was exactly two months ago and I still ain't right.

The cherry on top of all this? The initial flu vaccine they were giving was H3N2 or something, and even I'd been vaxed in 2009, apparently that H1N1 vaccine isn't effective anymore. And I am right in the middle of the age group that's getting hit the hardest with it. Ugh.

....At least I'm immune now, and I survived....

Oh ew! I'm sorry. That's going around? Ugh. I've been sicker than normal this winter and I hope I don't get that.

AYRT

Yeah it's going around but I guess no one would believe the media if they made a big fuss over it like they did in the 2009 "pandemic." Now they're vaxing for Pig Flu 2.0 here but it's already too late for those of us who have had it.

I've never had influenza like that, before; I got the initial chills, fever, vomiting, accompanying the runny nose, that I always get when I get flu. Three days later, I felt fine. 24 hours after I started to improve, I could barely move for the pain. :-P

I haven't had the flu as an adult, that I know of. I had a thing (fever, delirium, sore throat, sinus issues that turned into infection) two months ago that everyone said was allergies, but, personally, I think was the flu because I've never had trouble with allergies. And, then, chills and vomiting followed by three days of extreme nausea two weeks ago. And now... something. I'm not sure what it is besides sinus issues and sore throat again and general malaise. ANYWAY, I HOPE IT'S NOT GOING TO BE A FLU.

Oh wow. That sounds horrible. Glad to hear you're immune now/survived and doing better.

I caught it about a month before the media started running all their Swine Flu articles and it was fucking miserable.

And now with the current outbreak in North Texas, I've caught it again. Thankfully I think I've passed the fever stage of it.

Yeeaaaah, flu vaccines don't last that long. The flu virus mutates a lot, and there can be dozens of strains around at any given time, all varying in commonality. IIRC, every year the vaccine makers pick the three most common ones and make vaccines of those three. So only those ones are suppressed, next year there will be different common strains that got around because they weren't protected against, you will need a different vaccine to be protected against them, and even then you can still get the flu anyway if you chance on one of the rarer strains.

Viruses are just nasty that way. Hopefully you don't catch yet another strain.

Huh. I didn't know swine flu was still out there. I count myself very lucky for never having had flu once in my whole life. (And no, i've never been vaccinated, either.)

Nope, I got the hamthrax way back when it was going around. Sickest I've ever been as an adult -_-
