Hey, so I watched Teen Wolf last night and now I’m curious about dreams (slight spoilers for 3x13)

Stiles said some things about dreams that puzzled me – you can’t read in your dreams and people have extra fingers in your dreams. Now, I can read in my dreams and I’ve never noticed anyone with extra fingers. What about you guys? Does this happen to you?

I was very puzzled by the "can't read" thing, because I *always* dream about reading things -- usually news for my favorite shows, but sometimes fic or books I'm in the process of reading -- and usually wake up disappointed when I realize it was only a dream. Granted, I think I'm usually nearly awake when that happens, but still: not awake yet.

BUT this morning I was just dreaming along about nothing in particular, when all of a sudden I was in an underwater cave that was not only too deep to reach the surface before running out of air, but was also guarded by some sort of giant-mouthed sea monster. Woke up taking a deeeep breath from that one, and shortly thereafter actually thought of Teen Wolf and Stiles' whole "dreams turn to nightmares" thing.

I'm not a 100% sure, but I think I can read in dreams as well.

"You can't read in your dreams" is a common statement, but I've yet to find any kind of credible cite for it.

I'm pretty sure that I have dream read as well. I remember reading titles of books in dreams and signage. I think once I was even reading a fic. I have never had the extra fingers aspect, or at least I don't remember people sprouting extra digits.

People believe a lot of weird shit about dreams that makes one wonder if they've ever dreamt. The 'can't read' one is fairly popular, but I've never heard the 'extra digits' thing before. Someone on a message board I frequent was of the opinion that 'eating' never happened in dreams.

It does sort of make one wonder about the writer's dreams.

I didn't hear him say the thing about the extra fingers but the reading thing struck me as weird. I read in my dreams all the time.

I've had dreams where I was writing or reading something and I glanced back at what I'd written and the words had changed to a different story. I could remember what I read before, but what was on the page was different. Maybe they mean something like that?

You can find explanations for both of those things from lucid dreaming techniques/resources.

One of the main 'reality checks' you'll be suggested is to reread things to see if they've changed. I think what they mean by saying 'you can't read' is that text often changes while you're dreaming if you look back at it.

As to the extra arms, I've seen a video on youtube where a girl talked about looking down and seeing a little baby arm growing out of her arm and realizing she was dreaming.

Lucid dreaming things talk about how your appearance can change in dreams - you are someone else, you have extra or missing limbs, you're the opposite gender - or how people around you can be oddly shaped or different in some way.

Dreams are weird and can be quite unique to the individual, I personally can't recall anyone in my dreams having extra fingers, but I can easily believe someone else had a dream like that.

I can and have read in my dreams: books, magazines, web pages and pretty much anything. Some mornings I've woken up incredibly disappointed that the story I'd been reading doesn't exist and I'm never going to find out what happened.

Can't comment on the fingers, because I haven't paid any attention to them.

yeah, people say there are all sorts of things that you can't do in dreams but I and a lot of others have done them. the only one I've heard about that's been true for me is the whole "when you run in dreams, you do it really slowly" thing. that happens to me all the time in dreams, it's like I'm running in slow motion. I always wake up kind of annoyed

Related to the not reading in dreams: I can't call anyone on a phone in dreams. I will try to enter the right number and my dream self can never remember the numbers.

Never heard of the extra fingers thing, though. I thought that was weird.

I was chatting on IM with a friend as we watched, and as soon as he said that, i typed '*a million fangirls google 'reading in dreams'*'

Heee.

I've never heard of it, myself. I *have* had that sleep paralysis thing happen, where i'm sort of awake but can't move or make any noise. Every time, i thought someone was in the house and i was trying to wake up and see who it was/get out/do something, screaming and trying to move, even to fall off the bed/couch, and i couldn't, and it was fucking horrible. When you do finally wake up, you're just...freaked out.

Oh, yeah, the sleep paralysis does happen and it is freaky. Also, those weird muscles twitches when you're just almost asleep are really unsettling.

So annoying! Makes your heart pound and you're wide awake, then. Hate that!

Some things that are really popularized about dreams aren't as common as we're made to think they are. Like recurring dreams, I've never had the exact same dream more than once in my life, but they're a staple in stories. I've heard the "not reading" one, and also being unable to read a clock, and things not working as they should, such as flipping a light switch and something completely untoward happens instead of a light coming on. My "this is a dream" signs are usually a lot weirder, like "oh, I probably shouldn't be able to fly and punch through walls right now..."

It's like the whole "If you die in a dream, you'll wake up" thing. Yeah, doesn't really work.
