It is depressing, but I'm not sure if I'd say it's YA.

That said, it is nice that the entire focus of that isn't "OMG, HE'S GAY!" for most of the books.

I believe all the Heralds of Valdemar series are considered YA. I could be wrong, because 20+ years since I read them, but. I do remember my friend (who is (a) gay and (b) over thirty years older than me) loved them. I thought they were fun for a new type of horse story.

The only reason I'm hesitant to say they're YA is simply because I've never seen them there, and not for lack of a chance. But that could just be here and/or because she was writing fantasy long before YA really became as big a thing as it is now, so she's just shelved in Fantasy by default.

Either way, they're good books for the most part.

Heralds of Valdemar series is considered YA now. But it used to be just in the fantasy section. Before they started deciding that women writer + book without explicit sex = YA.
