I have zero issues with atheism--I think it's a rational position. My issue is with how certain atheists on the internet conduct themselves. I don't think they're assholes because they're atheists; think they're assholes using atheism as another pillar to prop themselves up with. It's similar to having no issue with people enjoying My Little Pony but finding bronies annoying.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-08 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)I appreciate you clarifying your stance on atheism; I think I get concerned sometimes because very often when people talk about "atheists who are assholes on the internet," the entire atheist movement gets tarred with the same brush - including the very large subgroup of atheists who are trying to make the movement more welcoming and inclusive (and are therefore viciously attacked by those same assholes). It turns what should be a valid complaint against a particular subset of people into a stereotype that gets used to attack all atheists. I'm glad that's not what you're trying to do, but in my experience, that's what too many conversations about atheism (including ones that have taken place here) end up turning into. That's why I was hesitant to get into it, because I didn't want to accidentally trigger another episode of "Atheists Are..."
