I think there's a reason why people are attracted to generic characters, though... they're blank slates, you can imagine them to be as interesting a you want to be, which makes them easy to identify with. The fewer distinguishing characteristics a character has, the more easily this can be done.

This is my theory for why the Avengers fandom goes mad over Coulson.

Also why Twilight was so popular, with the bland female lead self-insert character.

I read somewhere that this is also a very important factor in why some people honestly think that actors without more than two facial expressions are good actors - they have that "blank slate the viewer can project themself on" going for them as well.
