I can see the usefulness in getting that point across. But I don't think it's worth making if you have to sacrifice one of the only major female roles in Sherlock Holmes canon to make her into a vampy Sherlock-stalker.

And let me emphasize: that point could've been made without hamstringing Adler's character, but surprise! Moffat chose not to do that.

There will never be a contemporary Irene Adler that doesn't want to fuck Sherlock.

*sigh* I hope you're wrong about that, but I fear you're not.

BUT SHE'S NOT

And never was. She was in one story! One!

the only major female roles in Sherlock Holmes canon

She was in one short story. How is that a "major role"? Mary Morstan's a MUCH more important character than she is.

Mary appears more often, but Adler's role is significant despite the fact that she's only actively in one story. When you're one of the few people to beat Holmes, that is a major role in canon, period. Most of fandom doesn't even question this, which is why Irene Adler (and Moriarty, who is mostly a behind-the-scenes shadowy figure) generally appears in every adaptation of SH without fail.

Most of fandom doesn't even question this,

And yet, there are some who do. It's called having an opinion, and just because it's a minority one, you don't get to just dismiss it.

/likes the 1954 British series because, among other things, it didn't have Adler or Moriarty.

There's no need to get defensive, I'm not here to tar and feather you for not thinking Adler's important. But if you already know that believing she's a significant character is a common (arguably even the majority) opinion of the fandom, why ask in the first place? Sherlock Holmes discussions are usually so civil, I'm not sure why you seem to want to start something.
