Dude, I work in spec ed. I know in great detail what words people associate with my students, and the people doing it generally aren't the people who care about (or are even aware of) ableism.

There are some insults with origins in disability, like 'idiot', where a lot of those connotations have been lost and where you can have a valid discussion about language drift.

'Retard'/'retarded' is not one of them.
