Disney, racism, and tumblr-ohmy

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Disney is racist lol seems to be really popular on tumblr right now, but I have yet to see anyone mention Doc McStuffins yet. The show is a huge success for Disney/Disney jr's line, and it has a rather large toy line. In the most likely case that you don't know what this is, it's a show on Disney jr that stars a little African-American girl who wants to grow up to be a doctor like her mother.

Disney doesn't have the best track record when it comes to these things, but I still don't understand why no one ever brings up the positive things they do when it comes to diversity.

Because bringing up positive things is helping the man, man. The only way we can enact social change is to constantly demand a giant international corporation make more diverse princesses while continuing to buy their crap. We don't care about Doc McStuffins because last I checked DOC MCSTUFFINS IS NOT A DISNEY PRINCESS.

I demand Disney make Doc McStuffins a Disney Princess so we can notice and then become angry about her, for diversity.

Doctor Princess? What do you think this is, Adventure time!

I guess because unless you have kids, you wouldn't pay attention to Disney Jr. The majority of Disney fans I know on tumblr are high school/college-aged. That, and Disney tends to promote their feature-length animated films more than anything else. It's what they're best known for, after all.

I see positive things all the time. Including a post celebrating that Doc McStuffins is one of the most popular children's shows right now. I also saw a post pointing out that more films that came out in 2013 passed the Bechdel test than failed it (which I think is the proper use for the test: looking at trends rather than individual films).

Huh, all I've seen are clusterfuck posts with color codes and that one person who purposely left out Lilo and Stitch to make an incorrect statement about their current PoC movies.

You are obviously following the wrong crowd. I honestly don't see much Disney racism on my feeds, but I have seen the posts mentioned where shows like Doc McStuffins is being listed as a good example. You've just gotta drop the negative blogs you follow and find new more positive ones.

So THAT'S where that toy is from. I see the toys here and there, but I've never seen the tv show it's apparently from. I guess it's not one of the free channels for us.

Yes, that one show they have totally negates all of the other problems in Disney's movies and shows.

Probably because in most people's rants they are specifically talking about problems with Disney. If people wanted to be well rounded in their rants then yeah they'd point out a few things that are "doing it right", but it's Tumblr so really all they want is the ranting.

However I have seen several people talking about the good things in the media, and yeah I've seen people praising Doc McStuffins. It's just going to be in a different space than the people who are talking about the negative.

I sometimes think criticizing Disney as a whole is a mistake, because it's a rather large company that branches into several different studios. It's easy to get caught up in bashing the whole company because there are a lot of negative things that come from the "Disney" brand.

A lot of major Disney studios are very much a boys club and they are very sexist and racist. That does not mean they aren't capable of good things here and there.

But mostly Disney, all of Disney, follows the money. For some reason small kid's television is a lot more progressive then a lot of the animation for older kids. I think in that way, Doc McStuffins is just following the trend of what is going on in young kid's animation right now, basically that it's okay to have minorities as a main character. Of course it's possibly Disney wanted to do something positive, but Doc McStuffins also became a huge hit this year and makes them tons of money. Disney loves money. And when diversity brings them money, Disney will be diverse.

Basically, it's a complex issue and I'm not even really explaining it well.

Well, that and Doc McStuffins isn't a Disney series any more than Totoro is a Disney movie.

I've seen it mentioned on occasion, but I imagine it's not much because most of the fandom focuses on the films.

Besides, since Disney's missteps wrt diversity outnumber what it's done right, I think it makes sense that the negative would be brought up more often.

Well, as far as tumblr goes? Because they don't care about the positive things Disney (or whatever their current target is) has done.

Well, let's put aside the facts that Doc McStuffins isn't a Disney series, it's produced by Brown Bag Films, not to mention that Disney Channels Worldwide is a different company from Walt Disney Animation Studios, or that it's quite reasonable to talk about systematic imbalances in feature film releases as a different thing from television programming (especially when two different companies are involved.)

People bring up those positive things all the time. They get criticized by those with dissenting opinions, and then the criticisms are criticized, and around and around we go.
