Sherlock is more popular than ever.

Someone posted on FS that the ratings for the premiere dropped by almost exactly 50% after it ran for 30min. (Meaning, of the 18m viewers (iirc) who watched it, 9m decided to turn it off part of the way through). So I don't think that theory holds a lot of water, unless you're basing your statement totally off of Tumblr, which is a lot of sound and fury, but not much else.

And last week's episode had the worst numbers since "The Blind Banker" So... no, it's not.

...this was the wedding one that all of Tumblr was basically frothing at the mouth over? Glorious.

Yeah. (-:

It wasn't. It was actually the second highest over night of all the episodes, but people keep comparing final figures to over nights.

It's the same with any other show, isn't it? Casual viewers don't stay for too long.

I am fairly certain viewers did not have that kind of noteworthy aversion (casual or otherwise) to A Study in Pink, though.

Every show loses viewers in the first 5 minutes or so just like every show gains viewers in the last 5 minutes. Sherlock lost a normal amount of viewers. There was no aversion, beyond the people who would not have watched anyway.

Currently the fist episode is the best watched drama episodes of the Christmas period and will certainly end up in the top 10 (or even 5) of the most watched TV shows of 2014 (there were only 2 or 3 shows with better overnights in the whole of 2013).

They only lost 400.000 viewers for the second episode which is pretty impressive too.

According to all the sites I saw when I googled it, the peak was 9.7m with the average being 9.2m. You might want to ask that someone to cite their source for the ratings dropping by 50%.

I remember seeing the 9m number, and seeing that they dropped around 50% after 30min in...so would that not mean it was 4.5m ratings by the end of the night, and they lost 4.5m viewers in 30min? I would have to trawl back through the last few days of FS for the anon who posted the actual numbers. (From the newspaper, IIRC.)

I think the "half" number you're remembering is "half a million", ie 9.7 to 9.2 million.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-09 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yep and if you look at the raw 5 minute numbers it shows that most switched of 5 minutes into the show. Which is normal and happens to every single show because there are always people who were watching the previous show and are late switching over/turning off.
