Yeah but which book series are you reading, the ones with the characters on the front or the ones by Lisi Harrison?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
This. Lisi Harrison's books contradict the other two canons (diaries that come with the dolls and webisodes/movies, and Mattel has gotten better about alining those together) to such a degree that most of the fandom considers them complete discontinuity.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'm (kind of) the opposite. I really love the dolls but I just can't bring myself to watch the shows or anything associated with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, the anorexia is strong in these dolls.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. They are pretty much all dead, if you think that werewolves are undead like vampires. So.

That happens to you when you're dead/entombed for 1K years/reanimated, depending on your zombie and vampire lore of choice.

"Why can't you pick up a book" seems like kind of a goofily "intellectualer-than-thou" thing to say over Monster High books.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much.
OP does know that without the dolls, there wouldn't be anything Monster High, including the books, yes?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Because the books are terrible.

Sorry OP

...I've only ever read Vacuum Flowers (and various short stories which escape my failing memory), so I've got no input for you.

Doll fandoms are actually pretty bg, and a lot of people make their own MH dolls. I enjoy it because it's such a creative side of fandom that I've never been a part of. I wasn't even aware that they had books.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I read a summary of the book canon and didn't like it.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-01-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I can't pick up one of the books, I've seen some movies and episodes and know their personalities from those. Also proud of my 23 dolls I've acquired and bought.
cakemage: (Up to no good.)

Because the books really, really sucked?

I hear you on that; except I'm more into the webisodes and movies. Not at all into the dolls. Kind of sad, because yeah, I'm in the same boat. I would love to get into the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
See, I love picking up books. I read a lot. But the MH book series left me really cold. It's not my kind of thing, but I love the designs and the dolls. Sometimes I just prefer to make up my own characterization for some of the dolls I think are beautiful (who wind up in snotty villain roles)...

The cartoons are cute... but when it comes to Monster High, there's no canon that I love the way I love just playing with my toys and making up my own stories.

But the fact that I ignore all book canon and prefer to collect dolls definitely doesn't mean I'm not a reader.

NO WAY the dolls are the best part

"Why don't you enjoy the franchise the way I do instead of the way you do?" is all I see here.

Mte

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
If you can spend money on a book, why can't you buy a doll?

See, this works both ways.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
(not the OP) Libraries are amazing.

Because one of the book series is very OOC, from what I've gathered. While the Ghoulfriends one seems to be pretty good. I dunno, personally, since I've never picked them up. I got into it from the SHOW, then the dolls. The books just don't hold any interest for me.

Sorry OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Aren't the webseries all "Being a unique monster is awesome!" and the books all "FREAK! Hide everything and pretend to be normal or no one will ever love you"? That might be why a lot of people are less than enamored. There's been a much bigger shift away from being The Debbies http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lo36ar6Dkg1qclgsio1_500.gif
