And you think "almost all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic" is an especially nuanced response?

Seriously? Seriously? You're saying it's a complex issue and shouldn't be boiled down to a black-and-white thing. Well, fine. But boiling down a complex issue to a black-and-white one is exactly what you're doing by ascribing criticism of Israel to anti-Semitism.

Not really, no.

Are there valid criticisms of Israel? Sure. I've made them myself -- and so have a lot of Jews, Israeli and otherwise. But pretty much everything most western kids parrot is derived from propaganda, because that's how propaganda works.

Okay. I don't think we're going to get anywhere on this, because it still pretty much seems to me that what you're doing here is still reducing complex issues to black-and-white. But fair enough, we disagree, that's cool. Good luck to you.

I'm really not, but thanks for the civil reply.

Actually, saying that most criticism of Israel boils down to anti-Semitism is pretty reductionist. Even if those criticisms are wrong, many/most of them come from legitimately disagreeing with Israel's policies. Sure, there is anti-Semitism and Anti-Semitic arguments mixed in, but that doesn't make up most of the discussion.

Allow me to temper that statement, then: Most WESTERN criticism of Israel stemps from anti-Semite arguments made by opposing regional bodies, heavily scrubbed down by the media for Western consumption, and parroted endlessly until enough impressionable Americans believe it.

I really don't know why you're hammering so hard on the America lever here, since America is relatively pro-Israel.

America's government is. But Americans != US Gov't.

Most Americans aren't pro-Arab either

I think that's kind of a separate issue, though. Unfortunately I think the majority American viewpoint of Israel and the Arab world is "so far away, who cares, when's the next Lil' Wayne?"

(Anonymous) 2014-01-10 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
So, Americans criticize Israel and it's antisemitism, but if they're anti-Arab it's just them being apathetic?

THANK YOU.
