Americans support Israel because (a) they're Jewish and regard it as the homeland of the Jews (b) they regard Israel as an important ally and a democratic state in the Middle East and view it as an obligation to support them for foreign policy reasons(c) they're nutbags Christians and believe that supporting Israel is a Biblical imperative and sometimes also that the establishment of Israel is one of the necessary steps to lead to the Second Coming

Ding ding ding! A huuuuuuuge amount (not all) of the support for Israel comes from catering to the religious base and maintaining neocolonial power. I'm not saying Israel is always wrong OR that Palestine is, but the U.S. motives involved are deeply suspect and mostly ideological.
