I don't recall ever seeing anyone looking down on people who were sad. People complaining about the melodrama of Ten's regeneration, sure. But most Who fans understand that many/most fans have their favorite Doctor who they are sad to see go.

There was a LOT of "suck it up. The show is about ~change~." going around back in the day.

Well, that's stupid. I don't personally have a favorite Doctor, but its totally understandable to be sad. I've been sad every time. We're losing one Doctor even if we're gaining another.

Although, maybe some of it had to do with annoyance at the way Ten's end was dragged out? I know that by the end even though I was sad to see him go, I was ready for it to be over.

lol I know people didn't like how it was dragged out, but idk. I didn't mind because it really was about saying farewell to the entire era. It wasn't just about saying goodbye to Ten. It was also about giving the audience a chance to say goodbye to all the characters associated with him.

I didn't like the drag out then, but that was before I realized it was like you said: not just the end of Ten, but the end of an era. I remember poor naive me going, "Oh, come on. You guys are going to still going to get the occasional cameo and guest episode like you always have been. It's just regeneration. He's not "dying" dying. It will be the same guy."

Oh, how wrong I was...

It was kitsch. Pure kitsch to write an episode around Tennant making soulful eyes at characters who just had their return (again) and should have been gone forever at the highpoint of their dramatic arcs rather than be paraded around for fanservice marketing. (Because actions in this universe have consequences, except when they don't, except when they do, except when producers want to pander in order to get an extra point of ratings.)

And the consequence of spending so much time on soulful eyes at everyone and Mickey was a two-parter of badly paced incomprehensible gibberish as the closer to a season that included brilliant scriptwriting, direction, and performances. It was a waste of a great premise, and a waste of a strong supporting cast. A waste of Tennant, who really deserved to go out on another "Midnight" or "Waters of Mars."

(Note, I LIKE Mickey, who already got a conclusion to one of the better character arcs of the revival, and didn't deserve to be turned into a kitschy accessory of a marketing stunt twice in the same season.)

I mean, I don't think End of Time was particularly GOOD.

But I don't think it was all that bad either.

The plot was all over the place, but the character stuff was generally really good and it hit the right emotional beats for me. Dealing with the return of the Time Lords in that way was a good and logical conclusion to
Nine and Ten's arcs.

And I thought it was nice to see and say goodbye to all those characters that I loved one final time.

And compared to Time of the Doctor, End of Time was a goddamn masterpiece and should be on display in the Louvre.

They really should have put the goodbyes over the course of the three specials rather dumping them all at the end. I mean, yeah, it might have dented Ten's 'I must deny this until I can't no more' thing, but it would have been less overwhelming and bulky.
