Fanfic writers, vidders and artists that bitch about not getting any attention bug me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I worked my tush off on some fanfics and they get a couple reviews each. I don't care. I'm happy to write and post and go write some more. The writing is the fun part to me. Responses are icing in the cake, but sometimes cake is fine without icing too. I get a lot of reads and little feedback and I don't mind.

It bugs me SO much each time I see someone say they're going to quit writing or drawing or making vids due to a lack of response. Why did they bother in the first place? I always thought going in it for the attention only was going to end in disappointment.

I write because I love it. The stuff I write might only appeal to 2 people in a fandom of thousands. I still don't care.

Why is feedback such a big deal? Look at your read count if one is available. Yeah, so it might count people who clicked, read for a sec and closed it, but still! People are NOTICING.

I think wishing for more feedback is valid, but when creators take that a step further and say they're going to quit or not finish a piece because of lack of feedback? Yeah, that is pure childish and dumb.

Different people have different motivations and it's easy to get caught up and compare yourself with people who get tons of positive reviews.

Doesn't make it any less annoying though.

I'm the same way. I'm writing because I'm having fun playing with the characters.

I'm overwhelmed that people like it enough to review/favorite/follow. That means someone else loves it. I'm waiting between chapters to update to give myself some time to look over the chapters, that's it.

But I'm not holding it against anyone if I don't get a certain number of reviews, that's not fair to those who did review. I'm doing it because I enjoy my story and want to share it and hope others enjoy it as much as I do.

I am an artist that is constantly wanting more reviews and notice. I want validation and I want people to tell me I'm good, because I secretly think everything I do is crap.

That being said I would never quit just because I don't get X amount of reviews, and I would never hold art hostage to fans to try and force reviews or attention.

I do not understand people who honestly do not care if they get reviews or not. I can't really understand that point of view, and am rather jealous of it to be honest.

Some people enjoy the process and other people enjoy the finished product and feedback.

And some enjoy both.

I can get why some people considerer not getting any feedback a big deal, different motivations and all.

I also think that holding a story hostage is extremely immature and that if they really stop doing something as soon as they don't get the attention they wanted, they probably didn't even enjoy doing it and only cared about the attention. That doesn't annoys me much, TBH.

But, people who complain but do get feedback? It's so disrespectful to the people leaving feedback that I can't stand it.

Not everyone is the same. For me, writing is fun. Typing, re-writing, editing, and posting to the internet is time-consuming and not fun. If people like what I'm doing, I will continue to post. If they don't, why would I continue? It can stay in my notebook.

This, this, THIS!

I write for my own enjoyment. I post it to the wide world to try and find friends/kindred spirits and entertain others. If it just stays in my personal files, I don't have to edit, spellcheck, check for consistency, correct grammar, etc. so on and so forth to make it palatable for a wide audience.

I do feel disappointed when I put that effort into making it all pretty to go out in public, and no one cares. That's why I love sites that at least show me how many hits things are getting, because then at least I know people are reading and ostensibly enjoying (since many seem to stick it out to the end). That keeps me sharing what I write, rather than just going back to hoarding it for myself.

Some people write/draw as a hobby or a quick way to get acknowledgment or make a buck, not as a passion. And there's nothing wrong with that - well, there's something wrong with "give me X number of reviews or I'll never finish this!", but there's nothing wrong with creating for attention.

I agree with this. Sure, it's nice to get reviews but I'm not bitter or angry about not getting many reviews or kudos. I mean, my most favorite thing I've written is the stupid Boehner/Obama spanking fic and it's not going to get much attention just because it's rpf crack fic. But, it was fun as fuck to write and I still enjoy rereading it every once in a while because I really like it. I write what I like and if other people like it too, cool.

Every time I see someone complaining about the lack of feedback on their fanworks one of two things is true about them. They're either not very good, or they aren't making works about a subject other fans are interested in.

I do post my fanart because I enjoy sharing it and getting feedback, and I can understand the desire for attention being a big part of someone's fandom experience. I don't post fanart very often but I've always got a surprisingly large amount of comments when I have, and it's really fun. It's cool to see other people passing your art around tumblr because they think it's neat. But, I think if e-fame and e-attention is your sole motivation for posting your works, you're going to find fandom very disappointing, because sometimes people just aren't going to give a shit about whatever you happened to post.

Congratulations on having the talent of being creative and productive with little or no feedback. You're 100% correct to call out and shame the people who enjoy it, because how dare they enjoy positive reinforcement? Those greedy attention whores! They should just write me piles of fic and be grateful for every crumb of a compliment they receive!

Oh wait, that's not right. This is an old, wank-filled argument that won't die because people like you absolutely cannot fathom the possibility that someone else might feel or work differently.

Re: Fanfic writers, vidders and artists that bitch about not getting any attention bug me.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I can't stand people who needs reviews to keep writing/drawing, because usually, as time passes, they need more and MORE and more feedback, and if people are unable to leave reviews for any IRL reason, they simply stop producing and dissapear, which is annoying for the rest of us who were waiting.

Also, you know what thing makes wannna punch stuff? When people complains non-stop not only of how they are not receiving feedback, but why is X fanwork getting more attention than theirs, which is inconceivable, because -and they don't want badmouth anyone but someone has to say it- X work only attracts low intellects, whereas theirs is clearly a masterpiece meant for superior minds. ugh.

Feedback is nice, people like to be noticed etc. etc. etc. buut...I don't like it when fanwork is held hostage and if a person is a repeat offender I tend to drop that thing asap. There's plenty more fics/comics/whatever I can check out.

I don't mind people requesting critique though, and I can see why people would get frustrated if they want to improve but no-one speaks up.

And if it's some kind of fanwork where they get money from views? The onus is on them to make it interesting enough that people will think to leave comments and feedback on their own.
