Not really.

Episode 2 was the most watched show on Sunday TV and it's not like there wasn't anything else. The season opener of Dancing on Ice (big ratings hit usually) got only 6.8million.

The first series averaged about 7million, the second around 8million. The Christmas special of Doctor Who got 8.3million.

So Sherlock only experienced a slight dip in audience but still managed to be the most watched programme on TV.

The Doctor Who Christmas special only managed 8.3 million? Huh. I thought that Downton getting 8.7 was a disappointment, but I guess it's not all that bad.

The ratings of Downton weren't the only disappointment about it.

It wasn't the best episode that Downton has ever done but it wasn't the worst either. It was a perfectly fun Christmas special IMO. I really enjoyed the letter hijinks.
