Parks and Recreation

(Anonymous) 2014-01-11 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else a bit bored with it this season?

- The Jerry jokes have reached a new tiring and nasty level.

- I miss Ann and Leslie. It was so refreshing to have two women on a TV show be actual friends, as much as I love Ben.

- I just don't feel the same upbeat optimism anymore, and while in a way it's nice to see Leslie become less of a Pollyanna... it's also a little depressing.

Please tell me I'm not alone?

Agreed!

I hated the Jerry jokes from day one, but yes, they have just been too much this season.

I was so upset that Ann was leaving the show, but it seems like the writers have forgotten all about their friendship this season anyway. The way to make Ann's departure really heart-wrenching is to up the BFF stuff so we really, really feel for Leslie when she leaves, but they probably won't do that till Ann's last episode, which will be all, LOL remember how they are best friends?

I bet something will happen, though, that causes Leslie to bounce back to her former optimistic self. Perhaps in the season finale.

Yeah, exactly, and the thing is... that's what so many shows already do, have two female characters we're supposed to accept are best friends even though they get almost no screentime with just each other, and if they do the conversations often aren't that substantial. Ann and Leslie having a real friendship was one of the things that drew me to the show in the first place, and now they've sort of become the generic "female best friends" too. :/

I think Leslie will bounce back as well. I'd love for her to run as Mayor - I bet she could do it, and she might be able to win over a different group of people.

da

Though they did it well in the Halloween episode, I thought. Ben just got drunk with Leslie when she was depressed over her recall; Ann got her out of it ("Never send a husband to do a best friend's job").

Ahh, that's true. And Leslie was the only person they told who showed actual, genuine excitement about their baby.

Yeah. But that's what happens to shows when they go on for a really long time, especially when people start working on other projects (I don't know how involved Mike Schur actually is with B99 but I'm sure stuff like that doesn't help).

Yeah, true. I think because of how strong P&R was I figured they could escape that, but it's yet another show that makes me think shows should only last a few seasons. :/

This season has been kind of depressing, like I understand the need to take the show in a different direction but it feels like all the characters are losing their dreams right now. Leslie got recalled, Tom lost his business, and April randomly decided not to go to school (I didn't like the way that happened either, I don't think April should be shown as the smart one when she makes so many bad decisions.)

And I'm definitely going to miss Ann and Leslie's friendship. I feel like it won't bee the same show when they permanently move her out.

But the show has been losing it for a while, it's still quality but for instance April and Andy started grinding on my nerves when I used to think they were the funniest characters. And you're right the Jerry jokes go too far as well.

I should look at who writes April's episodes, because yeah, sometimes she seems like the smart one, but other times she comes across as a bit of a more serious ditz, if that makes sense. It made sense when she was nineteen, I know nineteen year olds and yeah, that's kind of what a lot of them are like (everything has to be ironic, they're in jobs they don't really care about to get through school, etc), but... I really liked when they started giving her passion and focus, and then I guess they changed their minds or something. I don't mind April still being... April, but I feel like they can't decide who April is.

Well yeah I think part of my problem with April is her character "growth" has felt a bit strange and sometimes they even try to take it back.

A lot of her attitude also felt funnier when she was just the young intern and you could easily see someone of that age and in that position being that way. It started to feel less funny when she was this adult woman who was married. ... Not that I feel like she can't still be sarcastic, she certainly can. There is just sometimes a meanness and immaturity that remains in her character that gets less and less funny as the years go on.
