I think chardmonster is arguing that mission work today does not equal colonialism from 1500-1900, which is fair. Handing out Bibles doesn't compare to... that.

(And to be fair, a lot of the time during the whole colonialism atrocity missionaries were the only ones actually treating the locals as human beings. They expected them to give up their culture and religion and adopt European ways wholesale, but they also wanted to keep them un-enslaved and, you know, alive, unlike a lot of the commercial interests also driving colonialism.)

Handing out Bibles also doesn't do anyone a whole lot of good, and if the people are already Christian it doesn't even count as proselytizing, so I don't understand what the point of it is.
