Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags
True, some missionary visits could be useful. I've got a casual friend who goes to Africa once a year. He's an architect or something and builds wells. That I don't have a problem with, but when you start throwing in churches, bibles, sermons and preaching - it's really just not the best time. If it was in the cities and the well-to-do areas go nuts like every other religion. But I've always been sceptical when religious groups focus on those who are vulnerable and in need, be it food, shelter, mental health etc.
There's also as an ?anon? stated up thread, the unfortunate effects of culture erasure. ?anon? seemed to know more about that than me as my knowledge on Africa is mostly around orphaned children (woo family) and animals (woo uni), they're upthread somewhere and can probably explain it better than me.
It's all just >:/ for me. Can't do shit about it, but I'm probably always going to sideeye those who preach conversion at those in need of real help. Like, sorry if the annoyance is seeping through, I want to a government health care place for some mental help years ago and the first two therapists were very insistent on praying or ?going to god? as one of the steps to improving myself. I dropped both of them halfway through the sessions because I was so pissed. I wanted help for myself, not more conversion attempts when I'm feeling rather fragile and desperate.
Just. Argh! It's too much like preying on the weak! Why don't people instead go help out in communities that need the real help then go preach in the cities or wealthier areas. >:(
You don't sound rude! It's fine to come in with your person anecedotes. IceRed, however, was being an asshole. I hope I wasn't too assholish in my reply to you. It frustrates me.
Re: Finding out people you like are scumbags
I understand your feelings on it.
Also....it's kind of uncalled for for a therapist to push religion on someone. Therapists should be IMO at least, non biased, objective and putting away their personal beliefs at the door.
