This is sort of OT but: How well known is Moffat outside of fandom circles? I've only ever read discussions about him on the Internet. Would casual viewers of DW or Sherlock even know who he is? I'm just curious.

No. Casual viewers don't care/know about showrunners or writers. The most they know is the name of leading actors.

They might know him as the Scottish guy with the fuzzy hair that talks about Doctor Who on Breakfast Television. That is about it.

Doubt it. He's gotten a couple of awards, so people who watch those things might frown slightly from almost recognition but that's it.
