You DO know that without people paying memberships, the con-runners would not be able to afford to hold the damn event? Hotels charge a lot, and those prices are on the rise. Most conventions (not commercial ones, or giant ones with significant media sponsorship, but the average fan-run SF/anime/cosplay con) are run entirely by volunteers who get paid exactly nothing. Everything goes into the event site, supplies for the con, and the travel/hosting of the major guests. Most guests are only paid in travel/accommodation/membership, not money.

It takes a LOT to put one together.
