I'm with you on the Jean/Marco! Not that I mind the pairing, but I'm surprised it's got such a solid following still.

And you're right about the MC/Popular Character pairing, though I personally like to ship them because of interaction potential and not just "eee AU fluff" or whatever.

Yeah, I don't mind it either, but I'm a little burnt out, I guess. Its been a while, and I wish more people would focus on Jean's interactions with other characters.

And, yeah, the reason I can't really get into Eren/Levi is because, like you said, the majority seems to be AU stuff and the canon fics just come off as unrealistic to me. I'm also not super enamored with Levi either so there's that.

I think Jean is pretty interesting, though people don't seem to maximize much on what really makes him like that...

I can see how not being a huge Levi fan would be a damper (I personally love him and multiship, so fandom's a reasonably happy place for me XD). Luckily I can write my own fics for the stuff I really want, but it's not the same as being able to read a really good fic by somebody else... I'm hoping that when we know more about the actual plot of the show there will be more interesting stuff.

Out of curiosity, what bothers you the most in the canon fics?

Exactly! That's the problem with me. I find it hard to find fic for pairings I really like, and I could try to write something, but it's totally different from reading.

Hmm, the problem with Eren/Levi fics set in canon is that I just can't really see Levi pursuing Eren--who is smart in some ways but kinda a dopey kid in other ways--to being with? The fics just move too fast for my taste, and I need more build-up. Erwin/Levi and Hanji/Levi just seem more plausible to me given Erwin and Levi's shared history and the fact that Hanji is willing to give Levi a hard time sometimes.

Hmm, I notice the speed thing with a lot of ships, tbh - many simply "assume" that the characters are truly in love and just need the story to nudge them together (which suits people who already ship it), so the buildup can be sparse.

And makes sense what you're saying about Levi pursuing Eren. (maybe that's why subconsciously I often have Eren be the one initiating in my fics?) I agree with you that Erwin/Levi and Levi/Hanji takes less mental buildup, though with Erwin/Levi at least I dislike how a lot of the fics portray them, so it's not much of a solution for me... lots of potential, there, though.
