Are you by any chance the anon from yesterday's "what pairings did you expect to be more popular" thread?

That's what I immediately thought when I read this :D

For once, I cannot say that I quite understand the sentiment. I'm not sure if it's an unorthodox opinion, exactly, but I found Sir Henry as a character rather generic. Just your classic white knight in a shiny hat. If anything, I liked Barrymore much better.

Now I get what is attractive about the dynamics: I'm always up to reading some nice Watson&Third Party friendshippy fic, and I do find other character's attempts at solving mysteries cool. It is always refreshing to see what Watson is like outside of his interactions with Holmes. But I would definitely not go for HOUN.

However, I love what they did with Sir Henry in the Soviet adaptation. Yeah, he's a cheesy cringeworthy American (Maslennikov might have not known any better), but the scene where he and Watson get drunk is PRICELESS. And he does have some personality beyond the Insert Random Good Man cliches.

the scene where he and Watson get drunk

tonight I learned of yet another pastiche BBC Sherlock is ripping off

Really not sure about that. What did they rip off? The idea of two characters getting drunk? That is hardly original. IDEK if Moffat&Co even watched the Soviet films.

Plus, it isn't a pastiche.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
How would you describe it if not a pastiche? Love it, btw.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-01-13 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, an adaptation? A screen version? Cross-genre pastiches are tricky things, I'm not prepared to swear they actually exist.

It's one of my favorite versions ever <3

(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
He also got drunk in A Game of Shadows, so you could go for much more recent ripping-off than the Soviet adaptation. Although getting drunk isn't exactly a new idea, like dreemy said.

They are judging the hell out of that bearded guy, aren't they.

I feel like these Sherlock Holmes secrets with book illustrations are done by the same person. And this person is quite dedicated because I see these secrets almost every day.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-01-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Though it's not like I mind. I did do three or four of these a while ago (actually, I think I might have been the one to start the last wave of Paget!secrets), but these are obviously done by one person.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wait...you're NOT one of the Paget secret submitters? I feel like my life has been a lie.

"... I did do three or four of these a while ago (actually, I think I might have been the one to start the last wave of Paget!secrets)..."

I don't agree, I think it probably started out that way but by now everyone who's into SH on FS knows the style & it seems plausible enough that multiple people would use it.

Oh, come on — if you’re making an ACD Holmes secret, Paget illustrations are the OBVIOUS images to use. It’s what I would do.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
What else could you use for an ACD Holmes secret, though? Since there seem to be several Holmes anons, I'm more inclined to think someone started the trend, and now multiple people are doing it.

I'm more inclined to think someone started the trend, and now multiple people are doing it.

That's what I thought always assumed too. The secrets don't seem to be similar in content anyway, just in style.

Speaking of which, maybe I should hop on the wagon too. Except I barely seem to ever think of or submit secrets of any kind anymore...is that frowned upon? Like prompting on a kinkmeme without ever filling?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-13 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I thought this at first, but now I don't think so. The opinions expressed in the secrets are too different. Also, I'm pretty certain that there were at least a couple that had completely incompatible contexts -- one OP said they had just gotten into Holmes, another was clearly a longtime fan, etc.

I'm pretty certain there is at least one multiple!Pagetsecrets!anon, though. Maybe the trendstarter.

No they're not. Not dedicated enough for that.

I did submit this one and a handful of other ones over the past month or two, but I got the idea from previous secrets not done by me. There are at least two anons submitting these.

Since I got the idea by copying another, I wouldn't be surprised if there were more who did the same as me.
