Don't let anyone tell you that you're writing for the wrong reasons. You can write for whatever reason you want.

The way to get better is to start writing and get experience. You'll even have a leg up on people like me who never get feedback because I'm too cowardly to show my writing to anyone. Feedback is exactly what you want. Take advantage of that and use it to improve.
