Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane

Random Japanese words for which there is an English translation. I mean, I get it, some words don't have the best translation, but for the love of everything, occha means tea. Just use the word "tea". It's okay.

And then, and I know this is a me thing, but buzzwords in narration, especially when it just seems out of place? Like, I was reading a fic yesterday where someone who was supposed to be from 1923 made reference to the fact that she was "used to the male gaze", and while I know that, logically, those words do make sense together outside of the term "the male gaze" as is used in text books, and stuff, it just threw me out of the fic?

Like, the words make sense, but I'm just so used to seeing it not in fic, that having it in the narration/thought of the fic just threw me out of the story.

I really hate the random Japanese in general, at least if it's two Japanese characters talking to each other. Just... what?

The sentence was literally a character calling for tea from his secretary. "Mai, occha!"

It was super stupid. :I

That's... really stupid. I mean, what language are they supposed to be speaking if you have to add in random Japanese words? If everything is already Japanese, there would be no need for this? But eh, sounds more fancy and all.

The were supposed to be Japanese.

About buzzwords: I recently read a fic that had Tony Stark correcting someone on the bisexual vs polysexual terminology issue. Talk about ridiculous things pulling you out of the story.

What.

I cannot think of anyway that someone could write that with it being in character, unless someone Tony didn't like made a comment, and he Stark-phoned it right then and there to prove them wrong? But even that, I feel like that would be stretching it some. :/

Oh my god. I kind of have a feeling I know someone who would write something like that.

I'm probably beating a dead horse at this point, but bluestalking/feverbeats (aka the authors of the hapless queer avengers series)?
