who...may technically be considered AWOL from the military? I mean, she actually signed up and then didn't go to basic so I'm assuming she can get into deep shit for that but idk

Yeah, I was always curious about that. She did enlist after all, so couldn't action be taken against her?

I believe so. If you're signed up and you run, then action will taken against you.

As I understand it - and I could be wrong, someone feel free to correct me - but I believe you up until Basic to change your mind. But once you're on base/have gone through Basic you're owned by the military until either your contract is up or your released early due to unforeseen circumstances.

na

To my knowledge, I believe you can quit before going to basic without repercussion but you have to actually contact your CO and request to be released from your contract first. They are obligated to honor this request as far as I know. I'm not sure if action can be taken if you just flat out don't show up for basic and don't let anyone known about it but if they can, then I don't think it would be too serious. Maybe. I'm not an expert

You can just not show up and there aren't any repercussions. The first time there could be during the enlistment process is when you take the first oath at MEPs the day you leave for BCT/service equivalent. Then you go to the fort/post/base where your basic is. The day you arrive there is the start of your enlistment contract. When you first get there you're in Reception, where you get issued all your uniforms and get inoculations and eyes checked, stuff like that. You can be there a couple days or a couple weeks; it depends how long it takes until there are enough people for a training cycle (about 400 for the Army, IIRC). At any time you can say this isn't for you and they'll let you out. It takes a couple weeks but it's relatively easy. For the Army, it's called a Failure to Adapt chapter, and it doesn't hurt you or your future at all. The same is true for other service equivalents. You can request one at any time until the point where you successfully complete BCT. After that, I only know about the Army and it varies by MOS training requirements if you can do one. The AIT units have the option to deny your request. After you've been in for one year OR completed AIT, you can't request a Failure to Adapt discharge.
