Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane

Overuse of "nodding". People seem to nod at everything in fic, and I just keep noticing that word that it's starting to bother me. And lip biting. EVERYBODY IS ALWAYS BITING THEIR LIPS. Also, blushing. Not everybody blushes when they're flustered, dammit.

But I think the thing that has gotten to me the most is the whole "We are fighting/broken up/can never be together because of some silly little misunderstanding that could be cleared up in a snap if we would just COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER DIRECTLY LIKE MATURE PEOPLE" trope. It's rare that I find a fic that does it well.

This annoys me because lip biting is something that really, really doesn't flatter me. My lips are small enough already, dammit! I look awful. I just find it annoyingly teenage girl-ish and don't understand this magic, enthralling effect it's meant to have on love interests. You are not writing Bella Swan, ffs.

Well around 70% of romantic comedies in the last 15 years have all turned on that misunderstanding plot, so I can kind of see why it's over-saturated the fic world too.

Disagree about nodding because that's something real people do all the time. Maybe it's different in different cultures/places? But in the US it's exceptionally common in RL and in our media.

No, I know how common nodding is but I think there is an overabundance of mentioning it in fic, to the point where I find it distracting. Maybe it's just some of the writers I've encountered, but I think it unnecessary to mention a character nodding every five minutes.

Ohhhhhhh man the shallow misunderstanding thing. Ugh.

I see fics that have just... no tension. There is no actual conflict in the fic. Nothing actually happens. But because the characters agonize SO HARD about bullshit it like manages to fake having tension and emotional climax and you see people gushing over these fics so much and I don't get it. Nothing happened. There was no story. There was no plot. The fic could have been one paragraph long that reads something like "A finds B hot. B realizes A is hot too. They bang. Twu wuv. The end."

""We are fighting/broken up/can never be together because of some silly little misunderstanding that could be cleared up in a snap if we would just COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER DIRECTLY LIKE MATURE PEOPLE" trope."

Agreed, I hate that. Sitcoms would not exist without this trope, they all seem to use it again and again.
