Re: Small things in fic that drive you insane

People biting through their lip, clenching their fists, doing whatever until blood is drawn because they're so overwhelmed with an emotion. Unless the character in question sharpens their teeth it's going to take quite a lot of force for them to puncture a hole in their lip, let alone one large enough to immediately start dramatically dripping blood.

Worse still, accidentally chewing through your face or slicing your hands apart with your own fingernails is damn near impossible, and yet fics inevitably portray it as something that's happening without the character even noticing, only so the Love Interest can swoop in and clean their wounds. I might buy it if the character was deliberately harming themself for whatever reason, but 'oops my fist is bleeding how did that happen'? No.

Yes. IDEK, if I ever bit through my lower lip, I would have probably gone to trauma in like immediately. And then it would be painfully and slowly healing for the next month.

ayrt

I actually have bitten through my lip before (one of the joys of a dangerous job), and that's why it annoys me so much. It takes a lot of force for that to happen, and it's exactly as painful as you'd think.

I bit through my lip once, it hurt like hell and it was an accident. Hitting my head with my teeth over my bottom lip. It fuckings hurts and it continues to hurt for ages.

And as someone who regularly bites her lips, I never ever bitten through it, I tried now just to see if it is possible *spoilers* now my lip hurts and I wasn't anywhere near biting through it... I also have long nails, I have never hurt myself on them, it isn't like our bodies are made so we can seriously injuring ourself without meaning to do it, or with some outside force helping.

Only thing that could happen is if you have chapped lips and then you could draw a bit of blood, but again even during emotional distress it is really painful and you would notice it.

I mean, I accidentally scratch myself occasionally. Not serious, dripping-blood scratches, but enough to break the skin.

Eh, the hand thing depends entirely on the state of your fingernails. I've held onto something I didn't want to lose in a crowd so hard that afterward there were fingernail-shaped cuts in my palm. But I had long, sharp fingernails at the time.
