While homophobia is awful and should be presented as such, the insidious, acceptable on the surface kind of prejudice is often what gets people killed and regimes started, because people can't point and label villains - overt, 2D homophobes are easier to write but irritating as fuck to read. I'm a history nerd; I love to see social contexts and consequences written well. Having something like that treated as a plot device offends me hugely.
Myself, it pulls me out of a fic when a character "in lurve" suddenly loses all other aspects of their personality - becomes a blithering schoolgirl or ridiculously unprofessional. Yes, I know it happens in real life, but it's painfully ATG and takes away the reason I'm reading about them in the first place.
