This. Writing CAN get you involved in a conversation, but if your main motivation for writing is to be part of the conversation, you can do things like give feedback and write recs about your favorite stories. Post on your journal on tumblr about what your favorite stories are and why you liked them, and link back to the fics to let them know you've been reccing them. That doesn't GUARANTEE they'll want to be bff with you but honestly, neither does writing and posting in a fandom. If you see discussion going on in your fandom, go to where the discussion is.
