As somebody who writes fic, I can say that this can absolutely work. A lot of my fandom friendships are with people who commented on my fics, or sent me enthusiastic messages, and I'm always super happy to talk to people.
And as a result - because I spend time chatting with these friends, we talk about ideas and plotbunnies and stuff, and half the time I end up writing fics based on ideas that came up. The power of the Enthusiastic Reader should not be underestimated!
