The word they're looking for is "clothes" (meaning garments), rather than "cloth" (meaning fabric) - when I see sentences like your example, I get mental images of characters draped in entire bolts of unworked textiles. But yeah, it would be simpler and clearer for the writer to just say which article of clothing the character is sticking their hand under.

I would believe that if I didn't see it in every other fic I read lately, and they contain no other misspellings or grammatical errors I notice. It feels like a trend, just like some other stuff that props up everywhere, but mostly contained to one fandom.

Clothes also feels odd to me* but at least that is correct and it doesn't make me go "wtf?" at the story for a moment.

*Because who thinks like that and also I want to know which article of clothing.
