Since you didn't get it done for Yuletide, you can always stick less to the prompt, think on what you could/would like to do different and run in that direction.

That way it won't be another version of the same story, but another story that has something in common with other story.

How do you know it will be suckier? Have fun writing it and then decide if it's really suckier or even the same story after all.

I don't worry much about originality myself but I know it's something a lot of people worry about. Just write your story and the worst thing that will happen is you have fun writing something that you might not want to share with other people. That's okay.

If it's the pegging prompt (like I semi-suspect it is), then all I can say is, there can never be too much Mulan pegging fic.

(...this past Yuletide may or may not have given me a thing for it. >_>)

Multiple versions of a plotbunny is often a good thing, it means we readers get to see different takes on it.

As for your version being "suckier", well it might not be. Random readers might like your take better than the other versions. Tastes differ, so write your version for those who might like it better.

The one time I participated in Yuletide, my requests ended up getting pinch-hit. I got three stories on the same prompt by three different people, and honestly, I loved seeing how they had interpreted them differently.

I doubt you'd write a suckier version, just a different one - and believe me, the recipient will be super happy about it anyway :)

Do it for New Years, and I'll bet the person who gets it is delighted. More is good!
